After obtaining her BA (Hons) in English Literature from the University of Malaya, she was awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship and graduated with a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh. She then taught English at Nanyang University and Linguistics at the National University of Singapore (NUS). A few years after she became Associate Professor, she heard God's call to enter into a new season of full-time Christian ministry. She resigned from NUS in 1989 and proceeded to Regent College, Canada where she obtained a MDiv. Since 1991, she has equipped hundreds of missionaries for cross-cultural work in Asia. She has travelled widely and trained many language personnel in different parts of Asia. Now in her retirement, she continues to be actively involved in mentoring, missions, and writing.
