The counselling scene in Singapore has experienced substantial growth in the last two decades, partly as a result of government initiatives to ensure better mental, emotional and relational well-being among the general population. This monograph documents this growth, and in particular, recent developments which are directed at professionalising counselling provision. The increased availability and opportunity for formal counselling education and training in specific counselling models, as well as attempts to articulate the requisite standards for ethical counselling practice, are all steps towards making counselling provision a professional field.
Besides documenting these developments, the author presents data from a survey conducted on the providers of counselling in the Singaporean social service sector. The profile of these professionals, along with their preparation and perceived competence in managing various presenting problems are discussed. This data and other developments in the local field are considered in the light of developments in other societies. This provides not only a better appreciation of the challenges faced in the local counselling scene, but also raises important considerations for the future of counselling provision in Singapore.
